As a specialist in orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery, I was invited to provide a medical assessment of this highly topical and controversial case. <\/p><p data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"806\">As part of this reporting, I was a guest on <strong><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">ORF<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">\u00d63<\/span><\/span> <\/strong>and <strong><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">\u00d61<\/span><\/span><\/strong>to explain the risks, medical background and possible consequences of participating in the Olympic Games with a serious knee injury.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4ea9e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b4ea9e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">High-performance sport and the risk of injury - a difficult balancing act<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4bde12e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4bde12e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"1304\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orthogruber.at\/en\/cruciate-ligament\/\">cruciate ligament rupture<\/a> is one of the most serious injuries to the knee joint, especially in alpine skiing. The stability of the knee is largely responsible for quick changes of direction, landings and high loads. Competing in a major event such as the Winter Olympics therefore poses an enormous risk &#8211; both in the short term for further damage and in the long term for joint health.  <\/p><p data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1540\">At the same time, the case shows the pressure that top athletes are under: personal goals, sponsors, career planning and sporting passion clash with medical reason and long-term health.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-883e434 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"883e434\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Medical assessment<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7e4d43 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b7e4d43\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1645\">In my interviews, I emphasized the following points in particular:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23aca9f elementor-icon-list--layout-traditional elementor-list-item-link-full_width elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-list\" data-id=\"23aca9f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon-list.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"elementor-icon-list-items\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-chevron-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Individual decision-making:<\/b> Every injury and every body is different. Decisions must be made individually and responsibly. <\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-chevron-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Short-term vs. long-term consequences:<\/b> Participation may seem possible in the short term, but in the long term it may increase the risk of secondary damage such as meniscus injuries or osteoarthritis.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-chevron-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Team decision:<\/b> Close cooperation between the athlete, medical team, coaches and support staff is ideal.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1622d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b1622d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Special case Lindsey Vonn<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b8fa66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b8fa66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1645\">It is absolutely understandable that Lindsey Vonn decides to take part in the Olympic Games &#8211; especially in light of her exceptional career and experience in elite sport. <b>However, I would not recommend such a decision for normal athletes. <\/b>With such a serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orthogruber.at\/en\/knee-specialist-vienna\/\">knee injury<\/a>, there is a considerable risk of serious secondary injuries such as meniscus damage, cartilage damage or permanent instability of the knee joint.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae329d6 elementor-widget
